  1. An asteroid is classed as any small piece
  2. of rock, smaller than a planet or moon.
  3. Between Mars and Jupiter is the asteroid
  4. belt, which is made up of thousands of such
  5. bodies. Asteroids have constanly bombarded
  6. every planet, these bodies are generally 
  7. small, so they burn up as they travel
  8. through the Earth's atmosphere. 
  9. But occasionally one can be so large that 
  10. it will make it to the ground, this can have
  11. devastating effects. It is generaly thought
  12. that it was a large asteroid that killed off
  13. the dinosaur population.
  14. Moons do not tend to have atmospheres so
  15. they have no defence againts asteroids, you
  16. only have to take a look at our own MOON
  17. to see the damage they can cause.
