An asteroid is classed as any small piece
of rock, smaller than a planet or moon.
Between Mars and Jupiter is the asteroid
belt, which is made up of thousands of such
bodies. Asteroids have constanly bombarded
every planet, these bodies are generally
small, so they burn up as they travel
through the Earth's atmosphere.
But occasionally one can be so large that
it will make it to the ground, this can have
devastating effects. It is generaly thought
that it was a large asteroid that killed off
the dinosaur population.
Moons do not tend to have atmospheres so
they have no defence againts asteroids, you
only have to take a look at our own MOON
to see the damage they can cause.
